Excitment of the Day: Kevin Rose digging up comment

So yeah.. Its been a slow day so far. The most exciting thing to happen has been Kevin Rose digging up my comment on this story about the first photo of the new Enterprise ship for the upcoming Star Trek film directed by JJ Abrams.

Well, after over a year off, I've decided to come back home to seanthebond.blogspot.com.

Why the sudden change of heart? Why would I return to the blog that I started in my youth? Well, because I really would like to keep track of my thoughts in the coming two years. For those who don't know, I'm currently in grade 11 at Sir John A. MacDonald High School in Tantallon (Halifax), Nova Scotia.

I'm going to try and keep to update the website tri-weekly, but its hard to say if I'm going to stick to that schedule or not.

Anyways, I'm going to be experimenting with a couple of different templates for the site over the next little while. This pretty black one that I have right now is alright, but things could be better, especially the javascript.

Second Life has been hacked! And credit card numbers stolen!

I recently recieved an email from Linden Labs, the guys behind the popular free MMO, 'Second Life'. The email basically said that somebody got access of account and personal information such as phone numbers, addresses, and credit card numbers! Here is exactly what the email said:

"SECURITY BULLETIN

*SAN FRANCISCO, CA. (September 8, 2006)* - Linden Lab reported today that it is notifying its community of a database breach, which potentially exposed customer data including the unencrypted names and addresses, and the encrypted passwords and encrypted payment information of all Second Life users. Unencrypted credit card information, which is stored on a separate database, was not compromised.

The breach was discovered on September 6, 2006 and promptly repaired. The company then launched a detailed investigation that revealed an intruder was able to access the Second Life databases utilizing a "Zero-Day Exploit" through third-party software utilized on Second Life servers. Due to the nature of the attack, the company cannot determine which individual data were exposed. The company's technical investigation is ongoing.

"We're taking a very conservative approach and assuming passwords were compromised and therefore we're requiring users to change their Second Life passwords immediately," said Cory Ondrejka, CTO of Linden Lab. "While we realize this is an inconvenience for residents, we believe it's the safest course of action. We place the highest priority on protecting customer data and will continue to take aggressive measures to protect the privacy and security of the community."

Linden Lab advises all users to take appropriate precautions against misuse of personal information. To reduce the risk of fraud, Linden Lab will not contact individuals by phone or any other method asking for private information unless it is in response to an inquiry from the individual user."

This isn't good news for the company. And I'm sure paid subscribers aren't happy.

If you don't use the social news website, Digg.com, you should really check it out. Its a website run by the community. They submit stories and other users can vote or 'digg' the story to push it up onto the front page of the website. Its a very fascinating idea, and it has become very popular with over 500,000 members.

Click here. It really makes me miss the good old days. This site is very much true. Just one day I turn on the TV, and theres the G4 logo sitting next to the TechTV logo... A truly dark day. At least UndoTV is coming soon.

Fasterfox

I'm a Firefox user. I love the browser, it is very quick and smooth, but it still has some problems. Thats where 'Fasterfox' comes in.

Firefox supports extensions, which are add-ons for the browser to give Firefox extra functionality. Fasterfox is one of those extensions, and a great one at that. The add-on makes Firefox load webpages at a faster rate, it times how long it takes to load pages in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen, and, most importantly of all for myself, it has an amazing pop-up blocker.

Firefox's built in pop-up blocker is adequete, but not brilliant. Advertisers are constantly working on ways to get by pop-up blockers, and many succeed at getting them through. The Firefox team brings out security updates every month or two, but they have not improved their anti-pop up software during any of these updates. Luckily, Fasterfox stops any popups from getting through.

If you are having problems with pop-ups, and you are using Firefox, check out Fasterfox, you won't regret it.

Google opens 'Google analytics' to public

Google knows that website/blog owners find it essential to know how many people are coming to their site, and where they are coming from. With websites such as SiteMeter offering ways to show you this data, Google thought that they should get into the business too, with Google analytics.

Google analytics is an incredibly advanced web traffic tracking service. Previously, only specially invited people could use the service, just like with Gmail, but now anyone can sign-up for the service.

I just recently signed up for the service, and after quickly pasting the 'tracking code' on my blog, I was all set to go. So I went to check out my statistics, and I was quickly lost. There are 3 types of modes that you can choose to look at data under. 'Executive', 'Marketer', and 'Webmaster'. They all offer different graphics and information.

I love the great graphs that they give you to look at. It makes figuring out what countries your readers are coming from a hell of a lot easier. My only complaint about the service is that there so much information thrown at you, its hard to tell where to start. I wish that Google would just show you just essential information like how many hits you got that day, and the exact site they came from. I just want them to show me that on thhe front page so I can glance at the stats, and leave the page.

Within the next 5 months, the service will be improved, but Google may only make it more complex, and less simple. So if you're looking for a good service to check out who is visiting your site, I suggest Site Meter.

G4 bans my forum account... for no reason

Well... now I'm kinda pissed. I recieved an email today from my "good" friends over at G4. Here is what it read:

Your G4 account has been suspended for a period of 2 weeks for repeated spamming and trolling with TechTV related posts. Be advised that any attempt to evade this suspension will result in additional suspension time

They didn't even say, "Have a nice day!". I was insulted.

This comes after I posted the news that Leo Laporte and Chris Pirillo were reviving TechTV. I guess that G4 is scared that they will sink further in the ratings because of this. I can guarentee that I won't be watching the network once UndoTV starts up.

No moderator even contacted my saying I was being suspended, they just did it automatically. Stupid G4.....

TechTV is coming back! (Sorta)

TechTV was a TV network that evolved around technology and had some of the smartest people in the tech world on the channel. The channel was on 24 hours a day and was devoted completely to technology. The channel launched on May 1, 1998.

Some cast members on the channel included TWIT host and technology extrordinare, Leo Laporte (see right), Digg founder Kevin Rose, video game and technology experts Adam Sessler and Morgan Webb, Chris Pirillo, and other tech experts Patrick Norton, Chris Pirillo, Alex Albrecht, Sarah Lane, and Martin Sargent among others.

In 2004, TechTV was terminated. The channel was bought out by G4TV, a videogame channel owned by Comcast. The channel was renamed G4TechTV. Many of the hosts well known hosts such as Leo Laporte left the network. Chris Pirillo left the network before the buyout I believe, but I am not 100% sure. By the end of the year, all of the TechTV personalities besides Adam and Morgan, Kevin Rose, Sarah Lane, Chi-Lan Leiu, and Brendan Moran, had been let go, including many work crew members.

Chi-Lan Leiu left the network in January of 2005. Kevin Rose left the network on May 27, 2005 because the network had drifted too far from technology, and he wanted to focus on Digg and create Revision 3, a website that produces video podcasts and features many old TechTV members. Sarah Lane and Brendan Moran later left the channel on April 10, 2006 to get married and travel the world.

In 2005, the "Techtv" part of "G4TechTV" was dropped out of the channel's name and it was called 'G4TV' again. It was around this time that technology and gaming was slowly squeezed out of the network. By 2006, the company's slogan, "Videogames TV" was removed. The network now is a MTV/SpikeTV rip-off with shows such as Star-Trek, The Man Show, and other syndications. Many of the network's original shows such as Filter, and Attack of the Show were revamped and given new co-hosts, and given less to none videogame content.

Now, THANK GOD, TechTV is coming back, sort of. Former personalities Leo Laporte, who currently hosts Call For Help for the Canadian version of G4, and Chris Pirillo (see right), previous host of Call For Help, are working to create an online community and "central hub" to let former TechTV personalities post video content. The website will be called undotv.com. This will be the main site where former hosts such as Chris, Leo, Kevin, Patrick, Sarah, Martin Sargent, and more can post video content. It will be like an online version of TechTV. On Chris's website, he says that he registered undotv.org, and undotv.tv as well. They may be used as a site where regular TechTV fans can post their own content.

No date yet on when the website will launch, but it is expected to later this year.

All Wii launch titles to this point

Buy-Wii.net has a great list of all of the games that have been announced to be launched the day that the Nintendo Wii hits shelves later this year.

The list may not be 100% complete yet though because more games could possibly be announced in the upcoming month or two. While there are 27 games that have been officially announced for launch, at least 10 more could as well. Don't expect a completely accurate list until early October.

Browser Stats

I was looking over the statistics for my website today and I looked at who used what browser when coming to my website, and I was quite surprised.

66% of the people coming to my website use 'Firefox', making it the most used browser. 'Internet Explorer 6' came in second, and 'Opera' came in third.

I guess all of the intelligent Firefox users are coming to website.

Paris Hilton album LEAKS onto the net!

Hotel Heiress, Paris Hilton's debut album leaked onto the net last night, just like another thing that she did leaked onto the net a year or two ago.

The new album has 11 tracks, with great titles such as, "I Want You", "Screwed" (ironic huh?), and "Turn You On". All of the tracks add up to a total of 40 minutes. That is about 3:36 minutes on average per song.

Marvel to release two films in 2008

Marvel has accounced that they will be releasing two films in 2008, will they be hits like the Spider-man or X-men movies?

Despite underwhealming reviews of 2003's 'Hulk', Marvel hopes to fix that and get more money with their upcoming film, 'The Incredible Hulk'. The movie will revolve around the struggle within Bruce Banner, who is the Hulk. The film will be very dark and sort of a horror type film. The director for the film will be Louis Leterrier, who is best known for directing 'The Transporter' series. There is no set release date, all is known is that it will be released in 2008.

The second film to debut in '08 is Iron Man. The film will be based on the popular superhero. There is very little details about the plot of the movie, but it will be directed by actor/director Jon Favreau. Favereau recently was in 'The Break-Up' and directed the children film based on the book, 'Zathura'. One thing known about the upcoming Iron Man film is that the villian in it will be Madarin.

To help boost the hype on the Iron Man film, Marvel is making a cartoon that will debut this fall.

When will 'Wii' launch?

Nintendo's next generation video game console, the Wii, has been getting a lot of attention lately. The main reason of this is because there is a lot of speculation about it.

While Sony gave away all of the Playstation 3's secrets at E3 2006, Nintendo was more careful and only let out some minor details. The most important of which is the launch date for the small little console.

Many are saying that the Wii will launch as early as mid October, or even the start of October. While others are saying November 2, or the 12.

According to IGN, developers will have their games ready for October, and with the Wii's already in production, a launch at that time COULD happen, but will Nintendo want to launch then? Buy-Wii.net is saying that according to their research, the little white box will launch October 2. It is possible, because Nintendo did say that the Wii would launch in the 'Fourth Quarter' of the year, and it begins on October 1, one day before the speculated October launch date.

Kotaku is saying that November 3rd is the launch date, because on a sheet they found, it said that the next Need For Speed game will be launched on the third. It is possible because Nintendo wants to launch the Wii before the Playstation 3 comes out, and this would be exactly a week beforehand.

What do I say is most likely? I'm thinking a late October, a date they haven't mentioned. But November is the most likely, between the 2-12.

We should find out from the horse's mouth on August 24th when Nintendo will be holding a press conference in Germany.

BREAKING NEWS! TERRORIST ATTACK FOILED!

British police arrested 21 people that they suspect were involved with a plot to blow up numerous planes flying from the United Kingdom to the United States.

According to British officials, the plot was in its "final stages". To take precautions, the US national security threat level was raised to 'red' for flights coming out of the UK.

Officials say that they were planning on blowing up flights going to New York, California, and Washington D.C., there is no information when they would have blown up the planes, whether it would be over the ocean, or over a city.

They believe that it was a plot from Al-Queda. I will write more news as it comes in.

Starting up a blogging buisness

I've been thinking a lot lately, with the sucess of Digg, MySpace, and blogs such as Perezhilton and TechCrunch. And why not start up one myself? Get a bunch of people together and create a technology or entertainment blog. I don't really have all of my thoughts together, which is a problem. I would love to get together with some people and create something, eventually getting a real domain like "news.com" or something. I'd like to have 3 or 4 people involved in creating it.

Will Gmail come out of Beta?

Gmail has come out of its Beta stage, or at least in Australia and New Zealand. Now any Australian and New Zealander can go to gmail.com, and sign up for an account.

While our friends down under can sign up for gmail accounts, the rest of the world isn't so lucky. In North America, if you want a Gmail account, you're going to have to know somebody with some connection. When Gmail was released April 1, 2004, only industry insiders and some users with blogger accounts were given an invitation into the service. Each member of Gmail got 100 invitations that they could send out to friends who want to have Gmail account.

Users from the United States can sign up for a gmail account VIA SMS messaging, but many users find it inconvenient and others cannot or don't know how to sign-up.

So for now, the rest of the world has to relay on their friends to give them invites to Gmail. Hopefully Gmail will be open to the public in the upcoming months, just like the guys deep down south can do now.

Amazing URL forwarding service

A lot of you out there might have a blog or website that is long and complicated, such as www.piczo.com/xsa-as-cxzad-xo or www.freewebs.com/tigers13xasdf21d4, (those arent actual sites). But do you want to shrink those links/URLs down to something like www.tigers.com? Well now you can.

With a website call JOYNIC. It is a URL forwarding service. With this website, you can type in a long URL and turn it into lets say, "www.seanthebond.com.tt", or "www.seanthebond.ca.tt". There is also .org.tt, .uk.tt, and many more just like that.

The only negative to this service is that it does put a pop-up or two onto the website, but most integrated pop-up blockers like the ones that come with Firefox and IE7 will block them, so that doesn't matter too much.

So go ahead, try it out, its a really great service, and it looks more professional that piczo.com/x--lisax--x

Weekend Box-Office Report

This weekend at the box office, the new Will Ferrall, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, took the number one spot with a surprising $47 million. This is surprisingly well considering that most films on average usually only make 23 million on opening weekend.

Barnyard: The Original Party Animals took number 2 with $16 million, showing that movie-goers may not be in the mood for animated movies right now with all of the other movies just like "Barnyard" such as The Ant Bully.

Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Man's Cheast came in third with $11 million, getting ahead of last weeks victor, Miami Vice which took in $9 million.

The Descent, a british horror film came in 5th with $8 million dollars despite the little advertising and publicity that the film had here in North America.
